Siemens has been active for over 60 years in Tunisia, where it holds leading positions in its Industry, Energy and Healthcare Sectors. In fiscal 2009 (October 1, 2008 – September 30, 2009), sales to customers in Tunisia amounted to EUR 20 million. New orders totaled EUR 16 million.
In fiscal 2009, Siemens in Tunisia scored major successes in the following Sectors:
Industry Sector
Siemens’ Mobility Division is carrying out various traffic management projects in the capital city of Tunis. These projects include the networking of emergency call stations for the Tunis-Bizerte motorway, the traffic signal system in the suburb of Manouba, and traffic lights for the “El Mourouj” route, south of Tunis. The Division also received an order to repair damaged rail cars operated by the Metro Léger.
Siemens was contracted to modernize the production facilities of two large government-owned companies, Groupe Chimique Tunisien (GCT) and Companie des Phosphates de Gafsa (CPG). Siemens has a large installed base of automation and drives systems, particularly in the domestic cement and mining industries.
Energy Sector
Siemens is well positioned to support the development of various power generation, transmission and distribution projects in Tunisia. In 2009, Siemens was awarded a contract for three gas-insulated substations, including two 225-kV and three 150-kV gas-insulated switchgears, for the project being carried out by Société Tunisienne de l’Electricité et du Gaz (STEG).
Healthcare Sector
Siemens continues to play an active role in Tunisia’s healthcare market, not only in the public sector, but increasingly in the private sector as well. The Siemens healthcare business has been managed since 1974 through the local agent International General Equipment (IGE) and was the first to introduce computed tomography and magnetic resonance systems in the country.
The history of Siemens in Tunisia dates back to the 1930s when the company began its operations with local agents. In 1990, Siemens opened its first local company in Tunisia. The company’s history has been marked by numerous milestones such as Africa’s first tram line, which carries more than 130 million passengers per year. This major project involved supplying 140 light-rail vehicles for eight lines in Tunis. This complete system is a unique reference project in Africa.
An essential driver for the local company’s performance has been its clear focus on using local expertise for key technology and management functions in order to provide complex solutions with value-added services at competitive costs. This has enabled the company to acquire important projects not only in Tunisia, but beyond the country’s borders as well.
