Since its inception, Siemens has been investing in innovation everyday. Innovations that will help solve the most pressing issues African countries and the rest of the world face today and tomorrow. Our innovations are produced by 32,300 researchers and developers, who are working on new solutions for energy, industry and healthcare – and by the over 1,000 new research partnerships which Siemens enters into every year.
Around 55,000 patents demonstrate our power of innovation – making Siemens one of the world’s most innovative companies. In 2008 alone, Siemens registered 8,200 inventions. During the same period, we filed roughly 5,000 patent applications – which amounts to 38 inventions and 23 patent applications per work day. In fiscal 2008, Siemens invested €3.8 billion in research and development, of which around €1 billion was devoted to developing green technologies. In 2008 alone, the CO2 emissions of Siemens customers were reduced by 148 million tons, an amount equivalent to the combined annual CO2 emissions of New York, London and Hong Kong.
