In 1990, Siemens opened its very first local office in Tunisia. It occupies a leading position in the areas of Information and Communications, Transportation, Power as well as Automation and Control. The company is one of the largest suppliers on the Tunisian market in the area of Information and Communications and it ranks second in the field of Transportation. One major project in this field is the placement of 140 light rail vehicles into service on eight lines in Tunis. This complete system is a unique reference project in Africa. In fiscal 2005 (October 1, 2004 - September 30, 2005), sales to customers in Tunisia amounted to more than EUR 70 million. New orders totaled nearly EUR 59 million. Siemens currently has more than 110 employees in Tunisia.

In fiscal 2005 Siemens Tunisia scored notable successes in Information and Communications, Transportation and Power :

  -

As a major supplier for Tunisiana, the first private mobile operator in Tunisia, Communications (Com) has equipped one million new lines in the GSM networks and installed all the components needed to set up new services such as GPRS (General Packet Radio Service). Com continues to expand the fixed network for Tunisie Telecom and is supplying new management and control systems.
  -

Transportation Systems (TS) received an initial order for the renovation of 140 light rail vehicles in the city of Tunis.
  -

The recently merged Power Transmission and Distribution (PTD) and VA Technologie AG (VA Tech) has been awarded an important bid to supply and install high voltage systems.

Siemens started operating in Tunisia in the 1930s through local agents. In 1990, Siemens opened its very first local office concentrating on Communications and business and IT technology. Last year, the company expanded its activities covering the business areas of Automation and Control, Power and Transportation in addition to Information and Communications. On the occasion of its 15th anniversary this year, the company changed its name to Siemens Tunisia.
In parallel, Siemens has developed export activities, operating as a technical center of competence in a separate company named Siemens Communications Competence Center, which has off-shore status. Geographically, this Siemens competence center covers the entire MEA region. It will double its workforce to 90 employees at the end of 2005.
